Christmas Bird Count Reaches 72 Species


Final Tally: Seventy-four years and still counting, Oxford’s annual Christmas Bird Count took place on Saturday, December 15, 2012. More than 34 local birders counted 72 different species of birds during this years count. The weather was quite mild as compared to other years with temperatures ranging from 40f to 50f degrees on an overcast day when teams went into the field around 7:30 AM.

The total individual birds tallied equaled 8933, far above AMV,s average of 7181. The top five species included 3411 European Starlings, 1438 American Robins, 500 Canada Geese, 294 Mourning Doves, and 243 House Sparrows. Duck populations in general remain in steady decline since Acton Lake was opened to duck hunting. The entire list of species over many years is available at:
